Privacy policy

What we collect when you read VideshTax, what we don't, and how to reach us about it.

1. Who we are

VideshTax (videshtax.com) is published by Marne Media LLP, a limited liability partnership registered in India. Marne Media LLP decides how and why the information in this policy is used, so it is the “controller” (in Indian law, the “data fiduciary”) for it.

To ask about this policy or your data, email contact@visaverge.com. That’s Marne Media’s contact address, which it shares with VideshTax’s sister site, VisaVerge; messages about VideshTax go to the people who run it.

2. The short version

  • You don’t need an account to read VideshTax, and there’s no way to create one. There are no comments, no newsletter and no forms that send what you type to us.
  • The calculators and checkers run entirely in your browser. The figures you enter aren’t sent to us or anyone else.
  • We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read, and our host, Cloudflare, handles the technical data every website receives.
  • We don’t sell your information, and we don’t show ads.

3. What we collect

Technical data when you visit

VideshTax is hosted on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare receives the technical details your browser sends with each request: your IP address, the page address you asked for, the time, your browser and device type, and the page you came from. Cloudflare uses this to deliver the site and protect it from attacks and abuse. If Cloudflare needs to tell people from automated traffic, it may set a short-lived security cookie; that cookie isn’t used for analytics or advertising.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4, a Google service, to understand how the site is used: which pages are read, how long people stay, how they found us (for example, from a search engine or a link), the country and approximate city they’re reading from, and their type of device, browser, operating system, language and screen size. We use this only to decide what to write, update or fix.

Google Analytics sets its own cookies (named _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID) to recognise a returning browser. Google Analytics 4 uses your IP address to work out an approximate location and then discards it; Google says it doesn’t log or store IP addresses in Analytics. We see reports about groups of readers, not individual people, and we don’t combine analytics data with anything else that could identify you.

Where the law requires your consent before analytics cookies are set (in the EU, the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland), we ask first. If your browser’s time zone is in Europe, a banner asks whether you’re happy for us to use Google Analytics, and Google Analytics doesn’t load at all until you click Accept. As a second safeguard, Google Analytics is set to keep its cookies off by default for visitors in those countries. You can change your answer at any time with Cookie settings at the foot of every page.

Search Console

We use Google Search Console to see how VideshTax appears in Google Search: which searches show our pages and how often people click through. Search Console doesn’t place anything on this site or in your browser, and the reports Google gives us are totals, not information about individual people.

What you send us by email

If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write. We use it to reply, to check and fix anything you report, and to keep a record of corrections. We keep it for as long as we need it for those purposes, and delete it sooner if you ask, unless we need to keep it to meet a legal obligation.

4. What we don’t collect

  • What you type into a calculator or checker. These tools work entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to our servers or saved.
  • Account, payment or identity details. There are no accounts, no sign-ups and nothing to buy on VideshTax.
  • Advertising profiles. We don’t run ads, we don’t use advertising cookies, and we don’t sell or share your information for advertising.

The site search also runs in your browser, using an index downloaded from videshtax.com. Your search words aren’t sent to a search provider, but they do appear in the search page’s address, so, like any page address, they can show up in Cloudflare’s request data and in Google Analytics.

5. Browser storage and cookies

VideshTax stores two small preferences in your browser’s own storage (called “local storage”), so the site looks the way you left it:

These are never sent to us. Clear your browser’s site data for videshtax.com to remove them.

The only cookies on VideshTax are Google Analytics’ cookies (where they’re set, as described above) and, occasionally, Cloudflare’s security cookie.

Fonts

The site’s typeface, Onest, is served from our own site, so loading it doesn’t contact Google or anyone else.

How to control cookies

  • Cookie settings, at the foot of every page, lets you accept or reject Google Analytics at any time.
  • Your browser settings let you block or delete cookies, for all sites or just this one. The site works normally without them.
  • Google’s opt-out add-on stops Google Analytics measuring your visits on every website: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

6. Why we’re allowed to use it

If you’re in the EU, the EEA or the UK, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the UK GDPR requires us to have a legal basis for using personal data. Ours are:

  • Technical data and security: our legitimate interest in running a site that works and stays secure.
  • Analytics: your consent, where the law requires it before analytics cookies are set.
  • Emails you send: our legitimate interest in answering you and correcting the site.

7. Who else handles your data

  • Cloudflare hosts and delivers the site.
  • Google provides Google Analytics and Search Console.
  • Our email provider stores the messages you send us.

These companies process data for us or alongside us under their own terms and privacy policies. We don’t sell your information to anyone, and we’d share it with authorities only if the law required us to.

8. Transfers between countries

Marne Media LLP is in India. Cloudflare runs a global network, and Google processes Analytics data mainly in the United States. So your data may be handled in countries other than your own, including India and the US. Where your data leaves the EU, EEA or UK, we rely on the safeguards those providers offer, such as the standard contractual clauses approved for this purpose.

9. How long we keep it

  • Google Analytics: data about individual browsers is kept for 14 months, then deleted automatically. Totals in reports (for example, page views by month) are kept longer, since they don’t identify anyone.
  • Cloudflare request data: kept by Cloudflare for as long as its own policies say; we don’t keep separate copies.
  • Emails: as described in section 3.

10. Your rights

Whatever country you live in, you can email contact@visaverge.com to ask what we hold about you, or to have it corrected or deleted. We’ll reply within one month. Because we hold so little, the answer is often that we have nothing that identifies you, apart from any emails you’ve sent us. The rights below apply where those laws cover you.

EU, EEA and UK (GDPR and UK GDPR). You can ask for access to your data, correction, deletion, restriction or a portable copy, and you can object to our use of it based on legitimate interests. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live or work; in the UK, that’s the Information Commissioner’s Office.

India (Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023). You can ask for a summary of the personal data we hold about you and how we use it, and ask us to correct, complete, update or erase it. You can also nominate someone to exercise these rights for you if you die or become unable to. Email us first so we can resolve any grievance; if you’re not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

California (CCPA, as amended by the CPRA). You can ask to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, and ask us to delete or correct it. We don’t sell your personal information, and we don’t share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We won’t treat you differently for using any of these rights.

11. Children

VideshTax is written for adults dealing with their own tax affairs. It isn’t aimed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you think a child has sent us personal information, email us and we’ll delete it.

12. Changes to this policy

If what the site collects changes (for example, if we add advertising or partner links that use cookies), we’ll update this policy before the change goes live, and change the date at the top of this page.
